Museum of the Royal Castle in Sandomierz

Located on seven loess hills, the medieval city of Sandomierz is one of the most beautiful and oldest cities in Poland.

Over 120 architectural monuments from various eras have been preserved here. To the highest class are included the medieval urban layout of the city with the Renaissance town hall in the centre of the square and one of the oldest brick buildings in Poland, i.e., the St. Jakob Church.

The times of Kazimierz Wielki remember the Royal Castle – now the residence of the District Museum, the  Opatowska Gate – the only gate preserved to this day in the system of fortifications of defensive walls and the cathedral from the 14th century with valuable Byzantine- Ruthenian frescoes inside. In the 17th century, late Renaissance, in Collegium Gostomianum there was located one of oldest secondary schools in the country and the  Długosz’s House – a perfectly preserved example of a Gothic residential house – gathers the rich collection of the Diocesan Museum. he approximately 470-meter-long  Underground Tourist Route, the unusual loess "Wąwóz Królowej Jadwigi" (Queen Jadwiga Ravine) and the 500-million- year-old "Góry Pieprzowe" (Pepper Mountains) with many species of wild roses are also waiting for tourists. From the top of these mountains there is a wonderful view of Sandomierz and the Vistula meandering below with  cruise ships sailing on it.
