On July 12-13, 1943, the Germans carried out one of the cruellest pacifications during World War II in Michniów.
The tragedy was caused by denunciations by German informers about the cooperation between the inhabitants and the partisans. 204 people were murdered. Seven people from Michniów died in German concentration camps. The Nazis also deported 18 young girls who were sent to forced labour in the Third Reich. However, the number of victims directly or indirectly connected with the pacification may be larger.
The mausoleum is a memorial site for 817 Polish villages pacified by the Germans during World War II. The newly opened seat of the Mausoleum, by means of modern exhibitions, is to become a centre for exchanging ideas and historical experience on the tragic fate of the inhabitants of Polish villages during World War II.
