The Medieval hillfort in Wiślica is a place where not only history enthusiasts should go, but also seekers of peace and interesting views.
The remains of the former settlement stand on a gypsum hill among the meadows of Ponidzie and the oxbow lakes of the Nida River. They are separated from the Wiślica market square by a short, approximately half-kilometer walk. Archaeological research shows that the first buildings were built here in the 10th century, but the outlines of the fortifications that can be seen here today come from the 12th and 13th centuries and are the result of the reconstruction of the hillfort after the invasion of Ruthenians and Polovtsians. Archaeologists found here, among others, huts (modest half-dugouts), farm buildings and a well. The stronghold had an internal road system. The importance of this place is evidenced by the fact that the stronghold with the collegiate church in Wiślica and the remains of the church of st. Nicholas have been recognized as a historical monument.
