Where are your glass houses? - Stefan Żeromski, from book The Coming Spring.
Ciekoty is a town located on the Świętokrzyskie Literary Trail, whose history is inextricably linked with Stefan Żeromski.
It was in Ciekoty that the writer spent his childhood. You will find admiration and longing for people met here, landscapes remembered and moments spent here on the pages of his novels or on the following pages of his journals.
The mansion where the writer's family lived at the beginning of the 20th century was destroyed by fire. In a place commonly known as Żeromszczyzna, you will now find the Education and Culture Center "Szklany Dom". Already in the name of the Centre, fans of Żeromski's work will find a reference to the famous glass houses presented in the novel "The Coming Spring". The center is located in a futuristic building, where numerous concerts, meetings with authors and festivals take place.
You will also find a manor here - a modern replica of a manor leased by the Żeromski family, referring to the 19th-century noble traditions. The interiors of the manor, with their atmosphere and equipment, accurately reflect the spirit of the era, the historical truth and the impressions of Stefan himself, described in literary works and private diaries.
At the back of the manor you will find a bench of the Żeromski family. Young Stefanek poses here for photos with his parents, Józefa and Wincenty. The Center and the Manor House are located by the pond, in which Łysica - the highest peak of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains - is picturesquely viewed.
Worth knowing
The Center for Education and Culture is a place where the memory of the Żeromski family is preserved in many ways. One of them is an event on the borderline of sport and tourism - Marathon Pedestrian Early Spring. Participants of the event start and finish in Ciekoty. Each of them has to cover 75 kilometers of the route leading through the most picturesque corners of the Świętokrzyskie Mountains.
