The layout of Ostrowiec Świętokrzyski is an interesting example of a city to which other localities, forming a closed urban whole, were attached.
The streets, which form the urban layout together with the square, depart from the square on a plan similar to a rectangle. The buildings in the town square in Ostrowiec were primarily wooden and have not survived to our times.
The oldest buildings can be found on the northern frontage of the town square (from Nowa Street), where tenement houses from the 19th century have been preserved. You will recognize the characteristic, high passageways in their shape.
Currently, the attraction of the revitalized town square is the fountain, which is a frequent meeting place for residents. The obelisk reminds us of the tragic events of World War II. It commemorates the execution carried out by the Germans on the inhabitants of the city on September 30, 1942.
It is worth knowing that the main square in Ostrowiec is not the only square that has performed this function in history. You will also find the town square, for example, in Denków - now an estate in Ostrowiec. This is due to the fact that in 1954 as many as 10 neighboring settlements with their own urban layout were incorporated into Ostrowiec.
