The elevation of the church of St. spirit and adjoining monastery pavilions blend in perfectly with the sequence of buildings leading from the Opatów Gate to the market square.
Less attentive walkers may not pay attention to him. However, those who see it from above, from the vantage point on the nearby Opatów Gate, will surely notice it.
A monastery and a church were erected here for the so-called spiritualists, i.e. monks whose role was to run a hospital and a nursing home for the sick, infirm and the poorest inhabitants. The wooden monastery buildings were then outside the city walls.
After the Lithuanian invasion in the fourteenth century, the hospital grounds were incorporated into the city surrounded by fortifications.
The monastery originally had only 1 storey. The first floor was added only in the 18th century. Inside the church, note the murals that appear to have three dimensions. It is an 18th-century performance of illusionist painting. In the chapel of Jesus Christ, adjacent to the nave from the south, you will find an interesting figure of the Sorrowful Christ. The sculpture, famous for its miracles, is said to have been moved here from the Sandomierz castle after it was destroyed by the Swedish army in 1655.
