Church of Our Lady of Sorrows in Bałtów

Bałtów is not only a tourist complex. A short walk around the area is enough to see that this is a place with a long and rich history, the testimonies of which you will find without much difficulty.

Already at the provincial road you will easily find one of the most interesting historic buildings in Bałtów - the church of St. Our Lady of Sorrows.

The history of the Bałtów parish dates back to the 14th century. About the church st. Andrzej, Jan Długosz himself wrote in his logbooks. The church already existed in the 14th century near today's palace in Bałtów. However, the wooden temple burnt down in 1729, leaving the inhabitants without a place to hold services.

It was then that the decision was made to place the main place of religious practice in the chapel of Our Lady of the Snows, founded in the 17th century by local potters. Before the chapel received the status of a parish church, it was rebuilt twice.

As a church, the chapel was consecrated in 1743. Since then, the surroundings of the building began to change, around which a cemetery was built, surrounded by a fence with the Stations of the Cross.

Years later, it turned out that the modest chapel was definitely too small for the needs of the local faithful. Another expansion of the church began in the 20th century. A presbytery and chapels were added to the old nave from the west. The chancel on the east side replaced the current entrance.

The church in its present shape was consecrated in 1920. Rococo altars dating back to the 18th century have survived from the old church.
