The shape of Sandomierz depended not only on the great donors who funded new buildings, but also on the invaders who destroyed the existing order, forcing the inhabitants of Sandomierz to build their city a new.

This was also the case in the 14th century, when after the invasion of Lithuanians in 1349, the completely burnt Sandomierz had to rise from the ashes. At that time, among others, the shape of the current market square and the Jewish district located on its western side were defined.

Unfortunately, the first synagogue has not survived to our times. The current one dates from the 18th century. In the 19th century, a communal house was added to it. The facility is not available for tourists. The state archive is located within the walls covered with a mansard roof. Its employees and guests visiting the archive can admire the original vaults and fragments of original polychromes. The synagogue played an important role in the film "Grain of Truth", the script of which is based on Zygmunt Miłoszewski's novel of the same title.
