Sculpture of Biruta in Kielce

Solna , 25-001 Kielce
50°52'10"N 20°37'32"E (50.869467, 20.625567)

The sculpture is located at the intersection of Solna and Staszica Streets. "The Oath of Love", because that is the name of the sculpture by the spring itself, has been  standing in this place since 1973.

The creator of the sculpture is the sculptor Ryszard Wojciechowski. The sculpture shows a seated woman with her left hand holding up a chessboard with figures and a cupid with her hand in an oath. It was made of Pińczów limestone and stands on a granite pedestal.

At the foot of the Castle Hill there is a small spring, from which water flows to the pond on the other side of Staszica Street. This place is called the Biruta Spring. Fans of Stefan Żeromski's prose will surely recognize the pseudonym of one of the heroines of the novel "Sisyphus Works" in this name.

And after a while, perhaps they will recall the scenes described in the book, in which Marcin Borowicz sighs to his platonic love of Anna Stogowska, known as Biruta. Love, or rather "The Oath of Love", has been the main theme of the sculpture by the spring since 1973. It was sculpted by Ryszard Wojciechowski, an artist working in Poland and abroad.
