The modest facade of the church, hidden behind a row of trees, does not reveal the medieval origin of the town in which it is located.
However, these are only appearances, because the church vaults hide real medieval treasures. The present parish church of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary comes from the eighteenth century. It stands on the site of an earlier temple that was destroyed by the Swedish army at the beginning of the 18th century. The church has had a strong imprint of its turbulent history. Already at the beginning of the 19th century, the Austrian army established their warehouse here.
During World War II, the roof and equipment of the temple were destroyed. After the war, in the 1950s, the work of rebuilding the temple began. And in 1992, during construction work, an unusual discovery was made here. Fragments of a Romanesque church were found in the basement of the temple. Further archaeological research revealed that it was a magnificent cross-shaped church.
