The visible fragments of the Szumsko Castle tell us little about this 14th-century stronghold. Fortunately, archeology comes to the rescue. Thanks to the research conducted here, it will be easier for you to imagine what a modern building looked like at that time.
The castle was built thanks to the efforts of the powerful Odrowąż family, but soon passed into the hands of the Poraits from nearby Kurozwęki. However, the stronghold was quickly abandoned and already in the 15th century - demolished. Why did the inhabitants of the castle leave it so quickly? According to the researchers, the reason was very simple: the builders built the stronghold not on solid rock (as it should be done), but on loose weathered waste. Without a solid foundation, the castle walls quickly began to deteriorate and crack.
Nevertheless, the castle was an interesting example of medieval architecture. The project quite efficiently combined residential and defensive functions. It consisted of a perimeter wall, which surrounded 4 buildings with residential, defensive and economic functions.
