The vicinity of Ćmielów is an ideal place for those seeking unsolved mysteries from the past and testimonies of ancient times. Only a few kilometers separate the knight's castle in Ćmielów from a more mysterious building in the nearby Podgrodzie.

The remains of the building stand on a hill towering over the village, the slopes of which fall quite sharply towards the Kamienna River flowing nearby.

Unfortunately, little is known about the history of the object itself. Most researchers claim that the mention of “Castrum Ćmielów” preserved in source documents from 1338 concerns not the building in Ćmielów itself, but the castle in Podgrodzie. This document confirms the sale of the castle to Gniewosz from Dalewice, later the castellan of Sandomierz.

The castle most likely had a shape similar to a circle, but archaeologists have not found walls around the perimeter. This allows us to assume that the building, although inhabited, was never completed.

Today you can see the faint remains of the walls and turrets in the south-western part.

It is worth knowing that climbing enthusiasts take their first steps in Podgrodzie. Behind the building line by the main road you will find vertical rocks, which are a frequent training place for beginner mountaineers.
